For a wealthy and rapidly ageing country, Japan remains an outlier in terms of attitudes to adult vaccination. Pre-COVID surveys showed that just 4.7% of Japanese adults agreed that vaccines were important, while 25.1% agreed they were safe and 9.9% agreed they were effective. Despite grappling with a flu epidemic in 2019, Japan is still struggling to significantly raise vaccination uptake rates among people aged 65 and over. And, since then, COVID-19 has presented new challenges and opportunities to increasing vaccination uptake in Japan.
Over the past two years, ILC and Stripe Partners have conducted a programme of work looking at barriers and opportunities to increase uptake of adult vaccination in Japan. Following field research in Japan speaking to older adults, industry experts, and healthcare professionals, we will be launching a policy report with our recommendations for action to move the needle on adult vaccination in Japan.
We will be showcasing these findings during a webinar to conclude the project and will be joined by experts to discuss this topic.
